Was born in 1967 into the Cowichan Tribes Native Band and was raised in Duncan, British Columbia, Canada. His interest in art began in elementary school and when he was in Grade 12 he made his own silkscreen print editions. Joe first began selling his carvings at a local Koksilah store at the age of seventeen. Since 1984 his work has reflected his search for his own cultural identity in Coast Salish art.
He has apprenticed under Master Carvers such as the late ‘Simon Charlie’ and Coast Salish artist ‘Charles Elliot’. Furthermore, he has studied under Nuu-chah-nulth master carver ‘Tim Paul’ at the Royal British Columbia Museum.
Joe has studied Coast Salish Art extensively and has emerged as one of the most prolific Coast Salish artists today. As an accomplished, world re-owned and prominent Coast Salish Artist and carver, Joe’s work can be found in galleries, both public and private collections worldwide.
