Born in 1973 in Campbell River, BC, Maynard demonstrated an interest in art at a very young age. He is of both Kwagiulth and Coast Salish descent and he has lived in both Canada and the United States. This cross-cultural influence shows through his work, which often demonstrates his unique and decidedly contemporary vision of many traditional legends and histories. Maynard began taking drawing seriously around the age of seventeen, teaching himself most of his own techniques through study and practice. Maynard credits Robert Davidson, Art Thompson, and Mark Henderson among many who inspire him to create. Although Maynard is known primarily for his prints, he also works with wood carvings and engraving precious metals.
