Bear Box Passport Purse in black designed by Clifton Fred, Tlingit Nation.
“This cedar box design represents the great respect one has for the Bear. In the Bear/ Mother Legend, we are taught to honour all things great and small; and that to embrace and not fear our unanswered questions will lead us to understanding instead of despair. The salmon and bear are symbolic; their relationship is like that of a man and a woman for alone they have no future.”

As a Crow of the Tlingit tribe, Clifton Fred’s artistic sensibility reflects the views and achievements of his cultural ancestry. As he puts it “through our art I hope we can remind each other of who we were, what we did, and how we felt. If understanding our beginnings enable us to know our ends, then we may find that all cultures have the same origins and therefore the same destiny. Knowing this we can do nothing other than work together.” The art of Clifton Fred is reproduced by Magenta in collaboration with the artist and royalties are paid to the artist on each item sold.
