MAYNARD JOHNNY JR
Born in Campbell River, BC, Canada 1973. He is Coast Salish descent on his father’s side from Penelakut Island and Kwakwak’wakw descent on his mother’s side from Cape Mudge on Quadra Island. A resident of Chemainus, he began his career as a teenager, and has continued his self-directed development of art-making.
Not long ago, he began to venture from painting into jewelry and wood carving. Maynard has won a number of logo and art competitions. His blending of the Salish and Kwakwak’wakw art forms has resulted in a unique and contemporary vision of many traditional legends. Maynard tries to incorporate those legends with each piece that he does and, in the telling of the story, he continues a long tradition that enhances his artwork and authenticates his interpretation of the designs.
