BEN HOUSTIE

Ben was born November 20, 1960, in Bella Bella, British Columbia. This area is representative of the Kwagiulth Nation, a tribe that inhabits the southern region of British Columbia. His uncle is Gordon Gladstone and his great-great-grandfather is Daniel Houstie.

Houstie’s talents specialize in original paintings, limited edition prints, rattles, and Jewellery. He uses such mediums as paper, wood, deer hide, and silver. Ben has worked with artists such as Cheryl Hall, Robert Hall, David Gladstone and Beau Dick. In 1988, Ben apprenticed under Bill Reid, the father of Northwest Coast art of the twentieth century, painting several drums of Bill's design and twenty paddles for the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Ottawa. These paddles were to accompany the fiberglass replicas of "Lootaas" the fifty foot Haida canoe carved by Bill Reid in 1986.

Ben sold his first painting in 1977 and produced his first limited edition prints in 1987 for Leona Lattimer Gallery. In May 1987, Ben's painting was selected for the Icpher Cahper World Conference held at the University of British Columbia.

Presently, Ben resides in Vancouver and continues to make original paintings and limited edition prints.
