Doug Horne, Jr. was born in Victoria in 1982 into a family of carvers. He has been heavily influenced by his father, Doug LaFortune, Perry Lafortune as well as his uncle, Frances Horne. All are established Salish artists. He has been carving professionally since 1998. Over the years, he has brought his art to a new level and is expected to be as masterful with his tools as his father.
Doug prefers to work in red cedar and generally presents traditional Salish crests, designs and motifs. Even at this early stage of his career, Doug creates wood sculptures, totems and talking sticks of the highest quality and standards.
Coming from a traditional cultural background where family heritage is treasured, preserved and passed on to future generations, Doug embraces his identity and communicates this connection in his work.
